A Message from the President

Updated:  04 October 2006

Another Season: is upon us!  It’s time to break-out the winter uniform and get it ready
for action.  There were plenty of games over the summer to keep you abreast of this fast
paced game.  Many of you attended the various camps to hone your skills…
Congratulation!  Realizing many of you had questions about the monetary effect the
CBOA partnering with NASO would bring, I sent out a detailed memo outlining the
advantages (savings) for most.  Many of you took advantage of the cost saving method by
joining early!  Welcome back to the returning officials and welcome aboard to the new
comers.

How to Enhance Your Chances of Moving Up: The below list is a compilation of
some areas where I feel officials must focus as they strive to improve, with emphasis on
getting to the next level.  I am sure there are others, but this is a step in the right direction:
  • Communicate effectively and efficiently with your partner.
  • Never attempt to officiate the fans/spectators.
  • Effective communication with coaches and players.
  • Be an attentive listener.
  • Don’t be ashamed or afraid to ask questions.
  • Watch other Officials but don’t try to emulate them.
  • Hustle in all phase of the game.
  • Use the appropriate mechanics for the level you are working.
  • Regardless of the score or talent, treat it like the game of the week.
  • Always have a pre, mid, and post game conference with your partner.
  • Wear the striped shirt; don’t let it wear you.
  • Recognize and respect your table crew.
  • Attend summer clinics for the purpose of getting better and not to get picked up.
  • Study the Rules during the off-season.
  • Dress the part.
  • Stay physically fit for running the court.
  • Know when not to blow your whistle.
  • Don’t call anything you can’t explain.
  • Be punctual to all assignments.
  • Never speak derogatorily about a fellow official.
Recruiting: Thanks to the Recruiting Committee for their Herculean efforts in getting
more people to join our ranks and assisting the Instructional Chair in putting on a week-
end clinic for last season’s rookie class.

Accountability: I often write about this because we still have a few individuals that are
unresponsive in totality to the concept…  As both individuals and a group we must hold
each other accountable for our actions, both on and off the court, when those actions or
the consequences thereof have an adverse effect on NCBOA.  Examples are, but not
limited to:
  • Not in the proper attire as prescribed by NCBOA, Inc.
  • Being late for a contest.
  • Not reporting a partner for being late.
  • Inappropriate communication with coaches, players, administrative personnel, or fans.
  • Utilizing improper mechanics.
  • Failing to help mentor less experienced officials.
  • Being part of the problem and not the solution.
  • Failing to maintain the required insurance coverage.
  • Failing to attend meetings or being disruptive at meetings.
Post Season Recognition Dinner: At the end of the CIF season we will have an end of
season dinner with our entire NCBOA, Inc. family as we recognize our officials for their
great efforts throughout the season.  It is scheduled for Sunday, 25 March, 2007, at The
Old Spaghetti Factory, on Twin Peak Road, in San Marcos.
